A Maldives Beach Awash in Plankton Looks Like an Ocean of Stars

Mother Nature can surprise us daily. Take for instance an extraordinary stretch of beach on the Maldives Islands.

This “Ocean of Stars” is actually millions of bioluminescent phytoplankton. Captured by Taiwanese photographer Will Ho, these tiny organisms glow just like fireflies and emit light when stressed, such as when waves crash or when they are agitated. The result is a stunningly beautiful glowing beach.

While this phenomenon has been observed for a long time, scientists have only recently began to understand the reasons behind it.
